Poor Thing - Embossed Vintage Photograph

This is an antique photograph from an estate sale, embossed with a scythe and lyrics from Ptolemea, by Ethel Cain. The photograph is on thick paper (almost cardboard thick) and framed in a very old, solid wood frame. the glass and wood definitely have signs of age and wear, adding to the overall energy of the piece.

About the Process 
After bringing this framed photograph home from an estate sale in Alabama, i carefully pried off the back (it is nailed closed) and removed the actual photo. i cleaned the glass as much as i could before replacing it. I hand-stamped and embossed the lyrics on the photo, then decided it needed something else. I had just finished carving a linocut of the recent coachella billboard depicting Ethel Cain with a scythe, so i used part of that carving to turn the child’s staff in the image into a scythe exactly like the one in the billboard. Once that was embossed, i replaced the photo in the original frame and closed it back up.
