This piece is inspired by the song “Family Tree,” by Ethel Cain.
The vintage photo is from an estate sale in Alabama. All the information I have about it is printed on the back.
To make this piece, I wrote the words out on tracing paper, laid it over the photo, and poked a needle through both layers of paper so that I wouldn’t make any unnecessary holes while stitching. Once that was done, I threaded my needle and carefully stitched each word. I used the same embroidery thread, needle, and a crochet hook to create the scalloped frame.
