This sweater features your two favorite gay geese, and this time, they’re feeling lucky. St. Patrick’s day is just around the corner and Jerry (right) has family over in Ireland. He flew the coop and migrated to Chicago for college with every intention of moving back, but then in waddled George. They may migrate south for the winter, but st. That’s right, folks, I am brilliant! If you want George, Jerry, or both to wear only a hat and leave their beards in the closet (haha) all you have to do is unclip them. AND, if that wasn’t enough for you to want this sweater, their little goose necks are left un-stitched to the garment, meaning you can add scarves to them as desired. Now if only someone would create and sell mix & match scarves specifically made for hookr geese sweaters….hm…

About the Process
As always with my Geese sweaters, the garment base is sourced second hand, washed, and blocked. Then I crochet George and Jerry out of recycled yarn and stitch them by hand to the sweater. For this one in particular, it was very important to me that the St. Patrick’s elements be removable so that this sweater can be worn throughout the year. Thus, I crocheted the hats and beards (no pattern, just freaked what I felt) and sewed them to the pins.

Dimensions

Height:

Length:

Depth:

Strap/s:

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0896/7120/5147/files/79F99FEE-50A5-4C16-B372-15BA91C26242.jpg?v=1772060145
crush-denim-vest
Crush (Stripped) Denim Vest

He looks like he works with his hands and smells like Marlboro reds.

”Crush,” by Ethel Cain, (the stripped version, of course), is the inspiration behind this piece. I wanted to incorporate the rings on the front of the original shirt into the theme of my final design, so I began free-handing crochet stitches into the rings with mohair. This was a lengthy process to achieve an asymmetrical drape that has a natural “drippy” quality that maintains intentionality. In other words, I wanted it to look messy, but not sloppy. To balance the asymmetry, I used a black cotton yarn to give depth to the left side, knowing the right would bear more text.

I hand embroidered the words on the front as well as the Ring on the back, laying threads repeatedly to achieve the vacillating look of Ethel Cain’s iconic symbol. I used the same thread and a tiny crochet hook to finish the raw, cropped edges of the shirt. Although this type of finishing would more traditionally done with a needle, the crocheted edge mimics the drape on the front of the shirt more effectively. At the time these photos were taken, I had yet to finish the bottom edge of the back, but it has since been done in the same way as the sleeves.

The original shirt was missing all of its buttons, so I reinforced the inner edges with white bias tape, then used a grommet setter to install vintage eyelets in place of the original buttons. I trimmed the chain to even lengths, installed lobster claw fasteners, and threaded each one through the eyelets.

To finish the piece, I diluted paint in water and fabric softener then dipped the corners of the collar into the mixture, inking them one at a time. I was able to find a more traditional use for two of the three pillows cases but decided that the third one would be great as a top.

The grid texture of the pillowcase was easily charted for cross stitch, and because the pillowcase naturally had a lining, I was able to encase all of the embroidery, leaving no exposed threads on the inside of the finished product. Ultimately, this makes it more durable item and provides a cleaner, more finished appearance. The ties are made from the excess inner lining that I did not need, and they’re long enough to be tied around the body for a tighter look, or tied to each other on each side for more loose, relaxed fit. The word “Nettles” is in reference to the Ethel Cain song of the same name. I used an alpha graph created by @maisonlainu for the lettering. I know the graph’s original purpose was for filet crochet, but it worked beautifully for this cross stitch, as well!

I’m tired of you, still tied to me
(Bleeding whenever you want)
Too tired to move, too tired to leave
- “Hard Times,” by Ethel Cain

About this Piece
This is an apron-style top, meaning it ties at the sides to give maximum adjustability and versatility. It is a reclaimed piece, meaning that the fabric that this top is made from was headed for the landfill before I intercepted it. Originally, this was a table runner, hand-embroidered with immense care and attention to detail, as even the lace edges are hand sewn.

About the Process
When I first found this table runner, it was in rough condition. I gave it a good soak, and even though most of the stains didn’t fully come out, I think that the discoloration only lends a more lived-in, natural quality to this antique artistry. There were also a few holes that needed mending in order for this piece to once again be functional. I used a fusible interfacing to patch them, then added my own hand embroidery, (matching the colors and style of the original artwork as closely as I could). The neckline is finished using biased tape for a smooth, clean edge. Because of the nature of this top (it’s a table runner) it is also completely reversible. So if you like one side better than the other, no worries! Just flip it around. The ties on each side are made from a misprint of my logo that I had experimented with on a vintage dish cloth. So everything about this piece is completely unique and handcrafted.

 * please note that because this embroidery is antique and original, This is a very delicate item and should be worn with special care.

About this Item
If you are unaware (as I was until I googled it about five minutes ago) what a bolero is, it’s a top that is basically just sleeves. There is no Body. I’m unsure how to categorize this top, but I’m pretty sure it’s a bolero. It is constructed from an infinity scarf and an antique handkerchief. The handkerchief features hand-embroidery that I placed front and center on the final product. The stretchy quality of everyone’s least favorite souvenir from 2014, the infinity scarf, lends this item a very nice, billowy bell sleeve. Who knew that’s what they were good for? This piece is perfect for layering as a statement over a simple tank top or for a little extra warmth on a chilly evening. Not much warmth though, honestly. I don’t say that with malice or contempt, I also don’t say it with love, it’s just a fact. Actually, I do love it. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t. The tablecloth was already cut into chunks when I spotted it, so I used this specific pattern in order to waste as little material as possible. I used every scrap of fabric larger than the palm of my hand to create this final product.
