I’ve been holding onto This top for a while, because it was too simple on its own for me to sell, but I knew I would eventually find something to add that complimented the deep purple color.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGoing through an estate sale one day, I found a single quilted floral panel that was in a pile of things to be thrown away if they weren’t purchased that day. Of course, I took it home and immediately knew it would be the ideal statement for this top. I carefully cut The floral piece out of the cotton square it was on and pinned it to the halter top, then pinned it again, then pinned it once more until I felt like the placement was perfect. I didn’t want to distract from the beautiful hand stitching that had already been done on the floral appliqué, so I used a coordinating green thread and blanket-stitched in the same style as the original artist all along the edges. The sun is warm and direct, but not roasting. There’s a cool, consistent breeze carrying bits of conversations on that deliciously salty air. There are no children around, only adults acting appropriately. They acknowledge (y\/n) with a half smile and a nod when she makes eye contact, but she feels no pressure to make small talk. She settles into the chaise as her margarita and fries arrive. She tips generously, then takes a long pull from the margarita’s straw and licks the salty rim with her tongue. (Y\/N) settles back into the chaise lounge and tips her green raffia hat with the little gold lion over her eyes. She can’t remember a time when she’s felt more relaxed than now, wasting away in Margaritaville.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAbout the Process:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis boater hat is crocheted from green raffia. The brim is sewn double to maintain its shape, and the crocheted pom on top is securely attached. It was a long table runner covered in a bright green lime print. This definitely is not the color scheme that I typically lean towards, but part of the fun of working with found objects is the challenge to make something undesirable desirable again. I’ve made the table runner tops before (see other examples, here and here) but this one was thicker, and there was no central piece of embroidery or imagery that I wanted to capture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first thing I did was choose a tank top from my own closet that I liked the fit of and I created a pattern from that. I used either end of the table runner to cut out the pattern pieces so that the front and back would both have the nice green hem along the bottom. After sewing them up, I was already pretty happy with how it looked but I still didn’t love that there was no “interesting“ design on the fabric. I decided to lean into the borderline obnoxious, kind of campiness of the material with the next steps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI thought it would be really cool to cut out the lime wedges and make them a window or fill them with tuelle or some kind of interesting texture. I had just had my birthday party, and I’d saved the thick piece of plastic from the top of my birthday cake box. (don’t ask why, it just felt like the right thing to do). And I’m glad I did, because it was the perfect thickness for me to use as the “window“ in the lime wedges. I filled the wedges with green bits and bobs from my house and also from The Craft Room (shout out). I stuffed all the little bits into the wedges like little plastic dumplings, closed them all up, then stitched the circular piece to the inside of the top and carefully sewed all of the dividers between the wedges so that everything was contained in its slot. As the final touch on the window, I used biased tape on the inside and stitched it all around the edge of the plastic circle, so there is no exposed plastic that would be uncomfortable when worn against the body. Finally, I cut some long strips from the remaining table runner material and added ties to the sides. I used some citrus colored letter charms to spell out “sour“ on the front left side of the hem, and “bitter“ on the back left side of the hem. Overall, I’m really happy with how this top turned out. Someone gave me this rainbow tank top that They bought under the influence of evil rainbow capitalism. Unfortunately capitalism does not care about Quality, so the armholes were two different sizes and the back had more room than the front (the front was almost like a racer back, but it was definitely meant to be the front so I have no idea what was happening there).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll that to say, I chopped it up so that the sides were at least even with each other, and cut the back so that it dipped low and was way less….ugly. But oops, this meant that it now had no sleeves, and also a lot of raw edges that I really didn’t want to hem. I went around the perimeter, starting at the sholder, all around the back, then up to the other shoulder, With a blanket stitch to create something for myself to be able to work into easier with a crochet hook than stabbing through the fabric. Then I used some orange yarn that I already had and crocheted along the edges until they were wide enough to fit comfortably around the arms and back then I added two long crochet chains at the top of each shoulder that criss-cross in the back like a corset to provide structure and security to a very open and breezy top. You can also adjust the placement of them by unscrewing them and moving them to wherever you would like your nipple tassel to hang. And if you’re feeling a little more casual, you can unclip the dangling pieces from the nipples and leave just the ring and screwed-on hardware.
